PIPESTEM, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Players took to the course bright and early Friday morning, teeing off for the 34th annual Homer K. Ball Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament. The tournament is held each year to raise proceeds which serve to fund scholarships benefiting students of Concord University.
Named for Lerona native and Concord alumni Homer K. Ball, the tournament has awarded over $163,511 and 391-plus scholarships over the past thirteen years. Ball would go on to become the Mercer County Sheriff, WV State Senator, and Physical Plant Director at Concord University. Fittingly, Ball was also an avid golfer.
The men’s division of the 2023 iteration of the recurring event saw the Encova Insurance team of Gene Bailey, Ernie Martin, Larry Turner, and Bill Sheppard lay claim to the first place prize, while the Elks’ women’s team took first place in their division with a team featuring: Linda Zirkle, Carolyn Truman, Donna Kowaleski, and Sandy Gay.
Second place in the men’s division was awarded to the Pioneer Community Bank team of Greg Shupe, Carl Bowman, Jeff Miller, and Nathan Steiding.
