MANSFIELD, OH (LOOTPRESS) – A 5-year-old boy has died after being left alone in a hot car in Mansfield, Ohio on Thursday, according to the Mansfield Police Department.
Officers were called to an assisted living residence on Wood Street around 3:15 p.m. for a report of an unconscious child.
When they arrived, they found the boy unresponsive inside the vehicle.
Police said it is unclear how long the child had been inside the car, but it appeared likely he had been there for at least several hours.
According to Kids and Car Safety, a national group that tracks and works to prevent heat-related deaths of children, this marks the first such death reported in Ohio this year.
It is the ninth heat-related child death in a vehicle nationwide in 2025.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that an average of 37 children die each year in the U.S. after being left in hot cars.
The identity of the child has not yet been released. Local authorities say the investigation is ongoing.
