WHEELING, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Dozens of citations were recently issued as part of the Wheeling Police Department’s “Operation Detention” traffic enforcement effort, which focuses primarily on traffic law enforcement in school zone areas.
According to the Wheeling Police Department, the primary focus of the effort was to stop key problems in high-traffic areas during the arrival and dismissal of students from school.
Speeding was a chief issue for many motorists, with the department reporting 51 speeding citations having been issued as part of the operation.
Additionally, seven drivers were cited for lack of insurance, six for prohibited use of a cell phone, three for lack of registration, two for texting while driving, two for lack of license, and two for U-turns/improper turning. A single citation was issued for driving suspended, as well as one for possession of marijuana.
62 traffic stops were conducted as part of the effort with officers putting in a combined 45.5 hours for the effort. The areas of Triadelphia Middle, Bridge Street Middle, and Woodsdale Elementary were particular areas of focus, says the department.
The Wheeling Police Department also held its Citizens Police Academy on Wednesday, where participants were given the opportunity to utilize the department’s in-house firearms training simulator. Participants also learned about the skill which goes into SWAT team operations and partook in demonstrations of various police equipment, tools, and weapons.
“We’re having a lot of fun with our fall class and still have several more classes to go,” said Wheeling PD in a statement.
