MERCER COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The Mercer County Animal Shelter is issuing an urgent plea for adopters and fosters as severe overcrowding could force the shelter to euthanize dogs for space.
The shelter announced Tuesday that it has until Friday to find homes or temporary placements for dogs currently in its care.
“MCAS is critically overcrowded. We have until Friday to get dogs adopted/fostered, or we may have to euthanize for space,” the shelter stated. “This is not a threat—it’s full transparency about our current reality.”
According to MCAS, about half of the dogs currently at the shelter are available for adoption. Dogs that have already been committed to rescue organizations can also be fostered locally until transportation is available.
Anyone can adopt from the Mercer County Animal Shelter regardless of where they live. Mercer County residents also have the option to foster dogs.
The shelter said five adult dog sponsorships remain available, meaning adoption fees will be fully covered for the next five adult dogs adopted.
Those unable to adopt or foster can also help by sponsoring all or part of an adoption fee or sharing information about the shelter’s dogs.
“Help us get these dogs into safe, loving homes before the weekend,” the shelter said.
The Mercer County Animal Shelter is open from noon until 6 p.m.
