COBB COUNTY, GA (LOOTPRESS) — A deadly incident at Six Flags Over Georgia on Monday prompted the company to temporarily close similar roller coasters at several parks as investigators work to determine what happened.
One guest died and four others were injured shortly before 4 p.m. October 12, according to officials cited by WSB-TV. Riders were later evacuated from the Goliath roller coaster after it stopped with cars near the top of the ride.
Witnesses told Atlanta station WXIA they saw a man fall from Goliath and strike parts of the coaster. Authorities have not confirmed how the guest died or how the other people were injured. Their medical conditions were not immediately released.
Cobb County Police responded to the park, and detectives with the department’s Major Crimes Unit are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Six Flags said park employees and local authorities responded immediately. The company expressed condolences to the guest’s family, said it was supporting affected visitors and employees, and pledged full cooperation with investigators. It declined to release further details, citing the family’s privacy.
The temporary ride closures include Fury 325 and Thunder Striker at Carowinds, along with coasters at Six Flags Great America, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Six Flags Great Adventure, Canada’s Wonderland and Kings Island.
Six Flags described the closures as a precaution. No reopening timeline was immediately provided.
