Charles (Charlie) Martin Karbonit Jr. of Beckley, 80, died Sunday, Oct. 2, 2022, in a Beckley hospital after a long illness.
Born July 11, 1942, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Charles Martin and Anna Kuhn Karbonit.
Charlie was a 1960 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, where he was quarterback for WWHS Flying Eagles football team. He also played on the basketball team and ran track. While attending high school Charlie was a delivery boy for Beckley Newspapers and after graduation he went to work in the pressroom. He retired in 2004 as night supervisor in the pressroom for The Post-Herald, now The Register-Herald.
At one time Charlie was one of the best golfers in Beckley. When he wasn’t devoting his time to his pressroom duties or playing golf with his many golfing buddies or traveling south to play golf, you could find him at Twin Oaks Golf Course in the pro shop or lending a hand on the course, later helping build Beaver Creek Golf Course and Saddlebred Golf Course, known now as Brier Patch Golf Course. He spent a year in Fla., helping his cousin Tony Kuhn build the former California Golf Club in Miami, Fla.
Survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife, Judith (Judy) Painter Karbonit; one daughter, Jenna Courtney and husband Matthew (Matt) Roop of Grandview Road, Beaver; one brother, William (Bill) Karbonit and wife, Sandy of Barboursville, and one sister, Cathy Fleenor and Perry of Beckley; his three granddaughters, whom he loved dearly, Mila Jordyn, Aspen Jayde and Charlee (Char) Ann, named after her PopPop; several nieces, nephews and cousins and friends.
Special thanks to the doctors, nurses and CNAs at Raleigh General Hospital who provided special care for Charlie during the past several months.
