UPDATE: FAYETTEVILLE, WV (LOOTPRESS) – After months of uncertainty and deliberation between various entities, the Fayette County Animal Shelter will officially remain active following a decision by the Fayette County Commission on Wednesday.
Commission members voted unanimously Wednesday to work alongside the newly formed Fayette County Humane Society in the management of the Fayette County Animal Shelter following the anticipated November 10 Departure of the New River Humane Society.
$75,000 in funding is said to have been set aside for the purchase of animal care items to maintain shelter activity, while the Fayette County Administrator has received authorization to hire six employees to assist in the transition.
“The public can expect full transparency and a shelter that prioritizes the needs of the citizens and animals of Fayette County,” the commission says.
“The Fayette County Commission recognizes the importance of animal welfare and control and it intends to continue to run the Fayette County Animal Shelter as a no-kill shelter.”
Additionally, it was revealed that the commission hopes to secure grant funds to begin the construction of a new facility for the Fayette County Humane Society operation in the future.
A team comprised if individuals from various groups, including the Fayette County Commission, Fayette County Animal Control, and the Fayette County and New River Humane Societies, has been assembled as well to assist in the transition of operations during the upcoming shift.
The commission additionally plans to host an open house event in the near future, and is actively seeking individuals looking to volunteer in assisting through the upcoming transitional period.
