SOUTH CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A suspect is in custody following a series of incidents Sunday night and Monday morning involving domestic battery and faux reports of an overdose.
The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office reports that on Sunday, January 29, 2023, deputies with the department were called to a residence in the 1600 block of Ruthdale Road in South Charleston, Kanawha County.
Deputy C.S. Sigmon, the investigating deputy, responded to the residence regarding a possible drug overdose. It was determined, however, that the suspect – Britany D. Dopen, 30-years-old – had in fact not overdosed, but was showing signs of impairment.
Several hours later at around 1:30am Monday morning, January 30, 2023, Deputy Sigmon was called to return to the address in South Charleston following 911 reception of reports that the suspect’s behavior had escalated.
“She was now destroying the residence while threatening physical harm to her parents,” read reports from the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office.
Upon returning to the scene, authorities found Copen’s behavior to indeed have escalated, having become erratic. Ms. Copen did resist arrest but was eventually detained by authorities, though this did little to subdue the suspected as she “continued her erratic violent behaviors.”
Britany D. Copen now faces one count of Domestic Battery, one count of Obstructing Law Enforcement, and one count of Failure to Fingerprint. She is currently being held at South Central Regional Jail awaiting arraignment by a Kanawha County Magistrate.
The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office has indicated that none of the individuals acknowledged in the report were injured during the course of these incidents.
