(LOOTPRESS) – Winter Storm Watches and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for a winter storm that will bring snow to the area Monday into Tuesday.
Overview
- What: Winds –Strong, gusty winds across the mountains through this afternoon. Strong wind gusts may knock over trees and damage infrastructure. Power outages are ongoing and additional outages are possible.
Snow – Snow showers this morning with light accumulations expected; no significant impacts expected. Area-wide accumulating snow Monday into Tuesday with 3-5″ inches for most; minor impacts possible.
*Confidence is increasing for 4-6″ inches of snowfall across southern WV and southwest VA; Winter Storm Watch has been issued starting early Monday morning.
Extreme Cold – Bitter wind chills across the mountains today as colder air moves in. Bitterly cold for the middle of this week, with potentially hazardous wind chills during the morning rush hour.
- When:Â Winds –Strong winds continuing this morning, highest gusts across the mountains; bitterly cold wind chills will accompany strong winds.
Snow – First round this morning. Second round on Monday into Tuesday. Snow tapers off by Tuesday evening.
Extreme Cold – Much colder and frigid this week, with the coldest temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday.
- Where:Â Winds – The higher elevations of the northeastern mountains of WV. Slacking off across portions of the lowlands today.
Snow – Today into Sunday, mostly limited to the mountains. Area-wide snow chances Monday into Tuesday.
Extreme Cold – Area-wide, with most hazardous lows and wind chills in the mountains.
- Confidence: Confidence is high on potential wind impacts and bitter cold this week. Confidence is also high for snow accumulations Monday-Tuesday; medium amount of snow end of this week.

Expected Conditions and Impacts
Today through tonight:
- Scattered power outages are ongoing and additional outages are possible from strong wind gusts.
- No major impacts expected from the snow this morning, light accumulations will occur, higher accumulations around an inch possible closer to the mountains
Monday through Thursday:
- Frigid and bitter temperatures expected behind a cold front that crosses the area on Monday. Hazardous wind chills possible area-wide, most likely Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
- Minor impacts expected Monday and Tuesday for accumulating snow across the forecast area. Impacts will be more abundant across southern WV and southwest VA.
- Widespread snow is possible Monday into Tuesday, light accumulations look possible across at least two-thirds of the forecast area. Highest amounts look likely across the mountains and southern portions of our forecast area.
