Ama Ree Steele Flowers, 83, passed away at Cabell Huntington Hospital on Oct 2, 2023 and is now rejoicing with our Lord and singing with the Angels! She was born April 14, 1940 in Holden, WV. She was the daughter of the late Parry Boyd Steele Sr and Ivory Nichols Steele.
Ama was a graduate of Logan High School and the Huntington School of Business. She attended the St. Mary’s School of Nursing for 1 year. Upon graduation, she accepted a position with the FBI in Buffalo, NY. After returning to Logan in 1970, she began her career at Logan General Hospital as a billing clerk and nursing secretary, retiring there.
Ama was a member of the First Baptist Church of Logan and loved singing, often as a soloist, in the choir. Gifted with a wonderful voice, she often sang at weddings, various other functions, as well as the choir. Bowling was a favorite activity in her younger days, as was dancing. Ama was a huge Star Trek fan, and even got to meet William Shatner(Captain Kirk) once. Collecting salt and pepper shakers from various destinations around the world was one of her favorite hobbies. Often brought to her by family and friends on their travels, as well as her own, she amassed an enormous collection.
One of her favorite events was hosting an annual Halloween costume party for her co-workers at Logan General. Everyone always had a great time and her deviled eggs were always a big hit! No one made better mashed potatoes, fried chicken, deviled eggs and cabbage rolls than Ama.
Working jigsaw puzzles and word search books was a favorite pastime. In recent months, she enjoyed watching the Hallmark Channel, especially the Golden Girls. She will forever be remembered for her spunkiness, kindness and compassion for others.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Jeffrey Jones, her brothers Parry and Joe Steele, her sister Joyce Steele Migliore, her niece Kim Avis, great-niece Kim Pierce, and her little dog Tazz.
She is survived by her daughter Annette (Don) Browning of Logan; her sister Wilma Avis of Charleston and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at Trinity Healthcare of Logan for the wonderful care and compassion they provided her this past year.
Visitation will be Saturday, Oct. 7 from 2:00-4:00 pm, followed by a memorial service from 4:00-4:30 officiated by Rev. Michael Hatfield. In keeping with her wishes, she will be cremated and her ashes scattered privately.
