CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Appalachian Power Company (APCo) announced Thursday that it has acquired the Top Hat Wind Facility, a 204-megawatt wind farm that has attracted industrial customers seeking renewable energy options.
The facility officially went into service on Friday, Nov. 7.
The Public Service Commission of West Virginia approved the Top Hat Wind Facility in 2023.
“Customers who want to locate or expand in West Virginia seek an energy mix with renewable resources,” said Aaron Walker, APCo president and chief operating officer. “Additionally, the addition of the Top Hat Wind Facility is expected to result in a reduction in West Virginia customer rates over the life of the project.”
West Virginia customers will see a slight increase in the Environmental and New Generation (ENG) portion of their utility bill starting Dec. 12.
For a residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt-hours per month, the increase will be 0.62%, or $1.08.
APCo said that as new users committed to renewable resources come online, along with other cost-of-service benefits, customers can expect the ENG tariff and overall bills to decrease over time.
As the heating season approaches, APCo is encouraging customers to take advantage of energy efficiency programs at TakeChargeWV.com and explore multiple payment options at AppalachianPower.com/Assist.
