PARKERSBURG, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Two people are dead following an officer-involved shooting and armed standoff Saturday night in Parkersburg that prompted a large law enforcement response, including the deployment of an armored vehicle.
According to authorities, officers with the Parkersburg Police Department responded to an apartment in the 3400 block of 25th Street at approximately 9:48 p.m. on May 16 for reports of an unknown problem.
While investigating the call, officers made contact with an individual inside the apartment who allegedly produced a firearm and opened fire on responding officers.
Deputies with the Wood County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist, and the Sheriff’s Office armored vehicle was deployed to the scene as the suspect continued exchanging gunfire with law enforcement.
Authorities said the armed individual was ultimately fatally wounded during the confrontation.
After the shooting ended, officers entered the apartment and discovered a second deceased individual inside the residence. Investigators believe that person had died before officers initially encountered the armed suspect.
The West Virginia State Police has taken over the investigation into the incident.
As part of standard procedure, one deputy with the Wood County Sheriff’s Office and one officer with the Parkersburg Police Department have been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the internal review process.
No additional information about the identities of those involved has been released at this time.
