WASHINGTON (LOOTPRESS) — Former President Joe Biden has entered a new phase of treatment for an aggressive form of prostate cancer first diagnosed in May, his office confirmed Saturday.
“As part of his treatment plan for prostate cancer, President Biden is currently undergoing radiation therapy and hormone treatment,” a spokesperson said in a statement.
According to a source familiar with his care, the radiation therapy is expected to continue for about five weeks. Biden, 82, had already been taking hormone medication in pill form prior to this phase of treatment.
Last month, the former president also underwent Mohs surgery to remove a skin cancer lesion from his forehead. He appeared in public afterward with a large bandage covering the area. His physician later wrote that “all cancerous tissue was successfully removed” and that “no further treatment is required.”
Biden revealed in May that his prostate cancer had metastasized to his bones, describing it as an “aggressive” form of the disease. At that time, his office said he was exploring several treatment options aimed at ensuring “effective management” of his condition.
“Cancer touches us all,” Biden wrote in a post on X after sharing his diagnosis. “Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support.”
Medical experts told NBC News that metastatic prostate cancer can go undetected for years, particularly in older men. The American Cancer Society recommends prostate cancer screenings every two years for men in their 50s and 60s, though it’s unclear if Biden was screened during his last medical exam in office last year.
Biden, who turns 83 next month, is said to be “doing well” and continuing to follow his doctors’ advice closely.
In 2023, while still serving as president, Biden had a cancerous skin lesion removed during a routine physical, with no further treatment required. He left office in January, several months after suspending his re-election campaign and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the Democratic ticket.
His decision to bow out followed mounting criticism about his age and fitness for office — claims Biden and his family have repeatedly rejected. Despite his health challenges, those close to him say the former president remains in good spirits and focused on recovery.
