CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A proposed bill, HB 535, would allow the Raleigh County Commission to impose a special district excise tax to support the Raleigh County Economic Opportunity Development District, which covers approximately 1,600 acres.
The tax could only be implemented after a public hearing is held, and any portion of the district that overlaps with a municipal boundary would require written approval from that municipality. The bill also shifts approval authority from the executive director of the development office to the Secretary of Commerce.
This does not create a special tax. What it does is allow the Commissionto use potential sales tax dollars to sell bonds to develop property. There is no new tax.
Supporters say the measure would help fund economic growth in the county. The bill is now being considered by the Legislature.
