BLUEFIELD, WV (LOOTPRESS) — A dispute between roommates turned physical on the evening of June 26, 2025, leading to the arrest of two women for domestic battery in Bluefield.
At approximately 6:59 p.m., Sonya Cordle called Mercer County 911, reporting that she had been assaulted at 180 Denver Street. When officers arrived moments later, they found Cordle outside the building with a bloody black eye.
Cordle told officers she lived in the apartment with Shelby Phillips and Phillips’ boyfriend. According to Cordle, the couple had been trying to force her out and began putting her belongings outside. An argument erupted while Cordle was sitting on the couch, during which she claims Phillips hit her in the eye with her own purse. Cordle admitted to striking back before the boyfriend intervened.

Inside the apartment, Phillips gave a different account. She said Cordle had been asked to leave for weeks and the two had a verbal confrontation. Phillips stated Cordle tried to throw a glass of milk at her, but the boyfriend stopped her. Phillips claimed Cordle attacked her from behind, prompting her to hit back. Officers noted cuts on Phillips’ arm, which she said were from the altercation.
Due to conflicting accounts and visible injuries on both women, both Cordle and Phillips were arrested and charged with domestic battery. They were transported to the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office for processing.
No formal statement was taken from the boyfriend, who appeared to be impaired at the time of the incident.
