WEST VIRGINIA (LOOTPRESS) – With Will Wade departing McNeese State to take the head coaching position at NC State, the search for his replacement is underway.
One of the most notable names in the mix is former West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins.
According to basketball analyst Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68, a source has identified several potential candidates for the vacancy, including Huggins, Baylor assistant Bill Armstrong, Oklahoma State associate head coach James Miller, Wake Forest assistant Matt Woodley, former Tennessee head coach Donnie Tyndall, Kansas assistant Chase Buford, and former NBA head coach Sam Mitchell.
Huggins, 71, has been out of coaching since resigning from West Virginia in June 2023.
A Hall of Fame coach with over 900 career wins, he spent 16 seasons leading the Mountaineers and previously had successful stints at Cincinnati, Kansas State, and Akron.
His potential return to the sidelines at McNeese would mark a significant shift for the Cowboys program.
McNeese athletic director Heath Schroyer and Wade have elevated the profile of the program in recent years, improving both its resources and national recognition.
Wade, who was hired in 2023 despite serving an NCAA suspension, led the Cowboys to an impressive season before taking the NC State job.
Schroyer’s decision to bring in Wade paid off, and now the university faces another crucial coaching hire.
Whether McNeese ultimately turns to Huggins or another candidate remains to be seen, but the program’s recent growth has positioned it as an attractive opportunity for coaches looking to make an impact.
