NICHOLAS COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – In a major step toward bridging the digital divide, Citynet, in partnership with the Nicholas County Commission and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) ReConnect Program, has announced a transformative $24,870,000 investment to expand its GIG Fiber Network in Nicholas County, West Virginia.
The initiative will bring high-speed internet access to 6,110 residents, 129 businesses, 118 farms, and eight educational facilities, marking a significant improvement in connectivity for this rural region.
Transforming Rural Connectivity
The USDA ReConnect Program, which funds infrastructure projects in underserved and remote areas, plays a critical role in this expansion. The program is designed to ensure that rural communities gain access to reliable, high-speed internet, which is increasingly vital for education, business, healthcare, and everyday life.
“Good, reliable high-speed internet access is an absolute necessity for every citizen in today’s world, not a luxury,” said Ryan Thorn, USDA Rural Development West Virginia State Director. “Connectivity opens the world’s marketplace to rural business owners, helps farmers increase production with advanced technology, and brings new opportunities to people in rural West Virginia.”
Local Leadership Praises Project’s Impact
Nicholas County Commissioner Garrett Cole emphasized the transformative nature of the project:
“This project will completely transform the rural areas of Nicholas County that so desperately deserve a better seat at the table for internet connectivity. We are humbled and thankful for this investment, which will create opportunities in education, employment, and boost our recreation economy.”
Citynet’s Commitment to West Virginia
Citynet CEO Jim Martin expressed the company’s commitment to improving connectivity in rural areas.
“At Citynet, we are dedicated to bridging the digital divide in West Virginia,” Martin said. “This investment will unlock new possibilities for Nicholas County residents—whether through online learning, telemedicine, e-commerce, or simply staying connected with loved ones.”
Citynet’s GIG Fiber Network will provide symmetrical internet service, offering equal upload and download speeds to ensure reliability and performance for users.
Boosting Opportunities in Nicholas County
With this investment, Nicholas County is poised to see significant advancements in education, economic development, agriculture, and quality of life. The high-speed internet expansion will also bolster the region’s recreational economy by attracting more visitors and businesses.
Looking Ahead
This collaborative effort between Citynet, the Nicholas County Commission, and the USDA highlights the power of public-private partnerships in addressing infrastructure needs. The project’s success will serve as a model for future efforts to connect underserved communities across West Virginia and beyond.
