ATHENS, WV (LOOTPRESS) — Alumni Weekend returns to Concord University April 25, and it’s packed with opportunities to reconnect with fellow alumni and visit The Campus Beautiful. Alumni are invited to join students for volunteer projects, cheer on the Mountain Lions at the spring football and softball games, celebrate rising alumni at the 2026 Class for the Decade of Distinction 10 Under 10 awards reception, and take in the spring theatre production.
As anyone familiar with Concord’s motto “Come to Learn, Go to Serve” can attest, the service projects that always accompany the Day of Service are a tradition both on campus and throughout the community. Whether they include beautifying the community, preparing parks for the next season, or putting the finishing touches on graduate boxes for future Mountain Lion alums, these projects always serve the greater good. The day’s projects reflect a joint effort between the CU Advancement Office and the Bonner Scholars Program.
“It’s great to welcome alumni back to campus to revisit the roots of ‘Come to Learn, Go to Serve’ as we engage in service projects alongside students and the Concord community,” Director of Alumni and Donor Relations Blake Farmer said. “The weekend serves as a great opportunity to reengage with the Concord community with a variety of activities to participate in with fellow alumni.”
Current members and alums of Greek life will be active on campus throughout the service projects, according to Assistant Director of Housing and Residence Life & Greek Affairs Coordinator Lauren Phillips. Sigma Sigma Sigma has announced plans to complete an improvement project on their lodge, and both Alpha Sigma Alpha and Delta Zeta will select a project from the service activities under way throughout the day.
In addition, Concord Museum will be open for touring, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., inside the J. Frank Marsh Library, and it’s something Director Elizabeth Chandler says every alum ought to see at least once.
“The Concord Museum is a small but mighty showcase of the wonderful items that alumni have donated to the University Archives to preserve our history,” she said. “We have everything from freshman caps to dance cards, so see what brings back memories for you, or even learn something new!”
Student Affairs and Concord University Alumni Association will each offer tailgating opportunities on the outskirts of the Callaghan Stadium parking lot, and fans of all ages will have the chance to cheer on Mountain Lions, beginning with the spring football game scrimmage, which kicks off at Callaghan Stadium at 1 p.m.
“Having the opportunity to host a spring event enables our football athletes and coaches to showcase the hard work and dedication they have put in during the spring semester,” Athletic Director Luke Duffy said. “It’s also a great chance for Mountain Lion fans to get a sneak peek into the growth of CU football under Coach Edwards’ leadership as he heads into season No. 2.”
Up next, the Mountain Lion softball team, under the leadership of Head Coach Alisa Tasler, will host a doubleheader against the Point Park Pioneers at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the softball field behind Callaghan Stadium.
At 5 p.m., the Decade of Distinction: 10 Under 10 Awards Reception will honor 10 outstanding alumni who have earned their degrees within the past 10 years and are excelling personally, professionally and in service to their communities. This event is set in the Pais Fellowship Hall at University Point.
Closing out the evening, “Firebringer,” directed by Jason Lockart, will take the stage of the H.C. Paul Theatre.
“‘Firebringer’ is definitely a hilarious ride, but it’s also packed to the brim with heart. With a backdrop of utter prehistoric chaos, ‘Firebringer’ is a story of humanity, community, faith and survival all mixed up with the message that kindness matters and people are better together. The music is full of songs you’ll be singing for weeks, the band is live, and the entire cast and crew are Concord students who have taken on a gargantuan amount of work to bring this show to life,” Lockart said. “We’re excited to present a play that feels truly professional and demonstrates to southern West Virginia how important theatre can be.”
