ATHENS, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Concord University has announced Jamie Null, a 2006 graduate and executive director of Visit Mercer County Convention and Visitors Bureau, as the 2025 Grand Groundhog Watcher. This prestigious honor, awarded during the university’s annual Groundhog Day Breakfast, recognizes individuals who have significantly impacted Appalachia.
Celebrating Null’s Contributions
Null has redefined Mercer County as an Appalachian travel destination through innovative leadership at the Convention and Visitors Bureau. Her decade-long tenure has seen the region earn seven West Virginia Tourism Awards, including distinctions for Best Social Media, Best Digital Media, and Best Public Relations.
“As a Concord University alum, it is wonderful to return to the Campus Beautiful as the 2025 Grand Groundhog Watcher,” Null said. “As a young journalist, I covered this event many times and later participated as a community leader in tourism. It is surreal to be honored this time around by the university.”
Transforming Mercer County Tourism
Null’s initiatives have revolutionized visitor engagement in Mercer County. She introduced:
- Huey, a mobile visitor center that shares Mercer County’s story directly with tourists.
- An ATV tourism program, emphasizing outdoor recreation and adventure.
- An AI-powered chatbot on the bureau’s website, enhancing accessibility and engagement.
Under Null’s leadership, hotel and motel tax revenues increased by 67%, funding local community improvements. Her contributions extend statewide as secretary of the West Virginia Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus. She also serves on the West Virginia State Recreational Trail Advisory Board, an appointment by former Governor Jim Justice.
Groundhog Day Tradition at Concord
The Grand Groundhog Watcher recognition is part of Concord’s long-standing Groundhog Day tradition, initiated in 1978 by the late Professor R.T. “Tom” Hill to celebrate Appalachian heritage. Concord Charlie, the university’s groundhog, will be on hand for the festivities, alongside President Kendra Boggess and the university family.
