GREENUP, KY (LOOTPRESS) – Early Sunday morning, fire departments from multiple jurisdictions responded to a CSX railcar fire carrying smoldering railroad ties that passed through the area of Greenup, KY.
The Greenup Volunteer Fire Department (Station 70) was dispatched shortly before 3 AM to assist the South Shore Fire Department (Station 85) with the incident.
Stations 60, 400, and 90 also responded.
The fire, which originated in Lewis County, involved a CSX railcar and was en route to the Russell railyard for containment.
Crews decided to separate the railcar in an accessible area to fully extinguish the fire, using approximately 30,000 gallons of water.
The Kentucky State Emergency Operations Center (EOC) was notified of the situation by Greenup County 911.
All fire departments cleared the scene and returned to their stations shortly after 6 AM.
