FAYETTEVILLE, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The Fayette County Board of Education has selected David Warvel as the district’s next superintendent.
Warvel, who currently serves as the superintendent of Summers County Schools, will step into the role on July 1, 2025.
The board approved Warvel’s appointment during its regular meeting on Tuesday evening with a 4-1 vote. Board member Cindy Whitlock was the sole no vote.
According to Board President Pat Gray, Warvel was chosen from a pool of eight applicants.
Among the candidates were three sitting superintendents, one associate superintendent, two central office directors, and two building-level principals.
Six of the eight applicants were selected for interviews.
“We had six great interviews,” Gray said. “Everyone who interviewed did a very good job for us.”
Gray also noted that one superintendent withdrew from consideration on Monday.
Warvel will succeed current Superintendent Gary Hough, who has been with Fayette County Schools for over 40 years and has served as superintendent since 2020.
“It is going to be very difficult to bring in someone behind our current superintendent [Gary Hough], he’s done a fantastic job for us,” Gray said.
Warvel previously served as Fayette County’s transportation director and secondary education director before becoming Summers County superintendent in 2020.
His contract will be negotiated in collaboration with West Virginia School Board Association Executive Director Jim Brown, Board President Pat Gray, and Warvel.
The finalized contract will be presented to the board for approval at its March 11, 2025, meeting.
