SOUTH CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Members of Federal Bureau of Investigations, West Virginia State Police, Beckley Police Department, and Raleigh County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office held a press conference Wednesday afternoon pertaining to the deaths of Susan and Natasha “Alex” Carter.
Larry Webb was identified early on as a suspect in the disappearance of the two females in August of 2000. This month, authorities discovered the remains of the two by way of an excavation of Webb’s property on Kyle Lane.
Webb had already been indicted for the murder of the juvenile and house at Mount Olive Correctional Facility when he suffered a medical emergency and passed away. Authorities confirmed during Tuesday’s conference that Webb did indeed deliver a deathbed confession, admitting to the murders of both individuals.
Raleigh County Prosecuting Attorney Ben Hatfield on Tuesday spoke to the events, indicating that Webb shot Susan Carter due to financial disagreements and that Webb shot Alex Carter in an attempt to cover his proverbial tracks.
“He began to go through his finances and that he suspected Susan Carter had spent a lot of money. They had an argument about it and he shot her,” said Hatfield. “He then said to investigator Shumate that, at that moment, he knew he had ruined his life forever. He then detailed that he believed he had to shoot Alex Carter to avoid detection for having killed Susan Carter.”
It was revealed that, after the murders, Webb stored the remains of the victims in the basement of his home before burying them together, in their clothes, in a shallow grave on his property.
When asked what is believed to have brought about the confession, authorities say that Webb was aware of his own impending demise and offered the information as a final confession.
Webb is said not to have provided an exact location for the remains, necessitating those involved in the excavation process to go “row by row” until such a time as the remains in question were detected.
A bullet discovered on the property containing the DNA of Alex Carter last year led to a Grand Jury indictment of Webb, which itself ultimately led to his incarceration before his passing.
