CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Crews recently began the demolition process for the former Lee Street Macy’s location in downtown Charleston as preparations for the planned Capital Sports Center continue.
The City of Charleston and Kanawha County Commission collaborated in the process, which has also drawn support from United States Senators Joe Manchin and Shelley Moore Capito, as well as Charleston City Council members, the Capital Sports Center Development Association, and others.
The demolition process is expected to take six-to-eight weeks total, at which point multiple entities will begin the collaborative process of determining the design for the planned complex, the construction of which could span roughly two years, according to county officials.
The project is being facilitated by ZMM Architects and entails a three-story structure which will include a fitness center, climbing wall, natatorium, six basketball courts, twelve volleyball courts, eight pickleball courts, a wrestling room, indoor turfed soccer area, indoor track, and other amenities.
The facility is being developed with the intention of fulfilling multiple roles, including that of providing a venue for travel sport activities and that of providing additional recreational opportunities for the residents of Kanawha County.
Additional information on the planned facility can be found at the ZMM Architects website.
