ATLANTA, GA (LOOTPRESS) – Former college football coach and attorney Derek Dooley officially announced his candidacy Monday for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff, setting the stage for what could be one of the most closely watched races of the 2026 election cycle.
Dooley, the son of University of Georgia coaching legend Vince Dooley, enters the race with strong backing from top Republican figures, including Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp. The seat is seen as a key opportunity for the GOP to reclaim ground in a state that has shifted politically in recent years.
“Unlike Ossoff, I’ll work with President Trump to implement his agenda, support his Administration, and move our country forward,” Dooley said in a statement. “I’m not part of the political establishment, and I haven’t spent my life climbing the D.C. political ladder.”
Dooley is reportedly working with several of Kemp’s top advisers as he begins to build his campaign infrastructure. His entry into the race reflects the party’s hopes of unifying two influential factions of Georgia Republicans: Kemp-aligned conservatives and the more populist MAGA base loyal to President Donald Trump. The two wings have often been at odds, particularly following the 2020 election, when Trump criticized Kemp and other state officials for refusing to overturn Georgia’s election results.
Republicans view Georgia as a critical battleground in 2026, with Ossoff considered one of the most vulnerable Democrats up for re-election. The party is aiming to retake or expand its narrow majority in the Senate, and Dooley’s candidacy adds a high-profile, politically connected name to the GOP field.
The race is expected to draw national attention and significant campaign spending as both parties vie for control of the Senate in what could be a pivotal election year.
