FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A Fayette County man is facing multiple charges after authorities say he led a West Virginia State Police trooper on a high-speed pursuit before attempting to escape on foot and falling into a creek.
According to the West Virginia State Police, the incident happened around 1:20 a.m. on July 11 while a trooper was patrolling U.S. Route 60 near Winona.
Police say the trooper attempted to stop a silver Honda Civic after noticing it had a defective brake light. Instead of pulling over, the driver allegedly accelerated onto Winona Road, prompting a pursuit.
Investigators say the driver, later identified as Nathaniel Workman, drove recklessly during the chase, repeatedly crossing into the opposite lane of traffic, running multiple stop signs, and speeding through intersections without regard for other motorists.
The pursuit continued onto Keeneys Creek Road, where Workman allegedly brought the vehicle to an abrupt stop in the middle of the roadway before jumping out and running toward a nearby creek.
The trooper pursued Workman on foot, and according to the report, the suspect fell into the creek while attempting to flee. The trooper ordered him back toward the roadway, where he was taken into custody without further incident.
During the investigation, authorities determined that Workman’s driver’s license had been suspended due to multiple unpaid traffic citations.
Workman now faces charges related to fleeing from law enforcement, reckless driving, and driving on a suspended license. Additional charges may also be filed as the investigation continues.
All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
