LOGAN, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Two individuals are expected to face Attempted Murder charges after a Logan County shoplifting incident led to gunfire on Tuesday.
According to the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, on Tuesday July 18, 2023, Corporal D. J. Miller of the Logan County Sheriff’s Department and Patrolman B. A. Mynes of Chapmanville Police Department responded to a shoplifting complaint at the Dollar General Store on WV Route 10 in Chapmanville, WV.
Responding officers were informed while en route to the scene by Logan County 911 that the suspects had exited the store and gotten into red 2010 Toyota Corolla.
An inquiry into the Ohio registration was requested of Logan County 911 by responding officers and it was revealed that the suspect vehicle had been reported stolen from the Lawrence County area of Ohio.
Corporal Miller located the suspect vehicle at Advance Auto in the adjacent parking lot of the Dollar General store. Corporal Miller and Patrolman Mynes then began to approach tge vehicle in question while giving clear commands for the driver and the passenger of the vehicle to put their hands out the window.
Reports indicate that Corporal Miller was giving high-volume commands for the accused to turn off the engine of the vehicle. The accused behaved as though he were complying to commands before abruptly shifting the vehicle into reverse and pressing down on the accelerator, nearly striking Corporal Miller’s police cruiser.
Patrolman Mynes, observing the action from the passenger side of the vehicle as it was occurring, attempted to gain entry into the vehicle from the passenger side to take the vehicle out of gear.
This sequence of reckless actions on the part of the accused caused Patrolman Mynes to be dragged by the car before the accused blatantly backed on to WV Route 10 directly into oncoming traffic.
At this point, Corporal Miller reportedly drew his service weapon and stepped in front of the suspect vehicle while Patrolman Mynes continued attempting to gain control of the vehicle from the interior. The accused then shifted the vehicle in to “drive” and steered directly toward Corporal Miller, who was able to sidestep the vehicle narrowly escaping being struck.
Corporal Miller then discharged two rounds from his service weapon, striking the accused. The suspect vehicle continued forward, striking a parked vehicle in the lot of Advance Auto Parts.
The accused was them rendered first aid, and the passenger taken in to custody. Patrolman Mynes was transported to Logan Regional Medical Center to receive treatment for injuries sustained during the incident. Corporal Miller was reportedly uninjured.
The suspect vehicle was confirmed stolen from Lawrence County, Ohio after further investigation. the driver of the vehicle,  identified as Barry Ethan Vaughan – 38 years old or Ironton, Ohio – was transported via life flight to Saint Mary’s Hospital and remains in serious condition.
Forthcoming charges reportedly include: Attempted Murder (2 Counts) Fleeing with reckless disregard, Fleeing causing Bodily injury, Transferring and Receiving Stolen Property, Bringing Stolen property into WV, and Obstructing.
The passenger in the vehicle, identified as Marina Dawn Adkins – 37 years old of West Hamlin, WV – was arrested at the scene and has been charged with Malicious Assault on a Police Officer, Transporting Stolen Property in to WV, Transferring and Receiving Stolen Property, and Conspiracy.
