RANDOLPH COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – An emaciated bear in distress has been handled humanely after attempting to get into a home.
According to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, on the evening of Monday, June 3, 2024, 911 dispatched a call about a bear trying to get into a home in Harpertown, just outside of Elkins.
Police then responded to the residence. The bear was located on a deck behind the house.

It was determined that the bear was in distress, emaciated, and clearly had physical ailments along with a mangy coat.
The pictures clearly show the gums of the bear which appear to be off-color and deformed, according to police.
The bear was humanely dispatched by the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office.
The West Virginia Department of Natural Resources (WVDNR) was contacted to retrieve the bear for testing for rabies or other debilitating diseases.
