FAIRMONT, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Fairmont State University announced Friday morning that Fairmont State student, Megan Kite, is the recipient of the 2022 Walter Regula Mathematics Teacher-in-Training Grant.
The $600 grant, awarded annually by the West Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics, goes to an outstanding college or university student each year who is training to become a teacher of mathematics.
Students eligible for the award must be training with intentions to become a teacher in the state of West Virginia.
Despite working toward a career in the field of mathematics education, Kite says that the development of her passion for teaching the subject was gradual, allowing her to overcome her own difficulties with the subject, stating,
“When it comes to math, I have not always had a strong understanding as a student. But I believe I can use my struggles to my advantage in helping students,” she continued. “I plan to truly learn about my students and help them to find the joy they can have in math. I understand that math takes time, it takes patience, and it takes someone that truly desires to see students grow.”
President of Fairmont State University, Mirta M. Martin, spoke of Kite’s notable accomplishment, commenting,
“Megan is the perfect example of the extraordinary, home-grown talent we have right here in West Virginia. We are so proud of her, and look forward to watching her grow, and the contributions she will make to strengthen mathematics education in our school system throughout the state.”
Kite came from Petersburg to major in Elementary Education and Mathematics 5-9 Algebra I. She plans to become an elementary school teacher upon graduation, and hopes to continue working with her West Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics peers.
2022 marks the second consecutive year that a Fairmont State University student has received the Teacher-in-Training Grant, with the 2021 award being granted to Kaitlyn Stumpf.
