Young says he had every intention of finishing out his term which concludes in 2028, but he felt like it was time to retire with plans to focus on changes in his personal life.
Young has been serving in the assessor’s office for 37 years and has been elected county assessor for six terms.
“I just started my 37th year in this office. I started out as an appraiser, came in, didn’t know anything about anything, put my nose to the grindstone and worked hard,” Young said.
In those 37 years, Young racked up many accolades including working his way up to President of the Association of West Virginia Assessors (AWVA), and winning Assessor of the Year from the Assessors Association, Assessor of the Year from the West Virginia State Tax Department, and the Lighthouse Award from the Association of Counties.
“I would like to thank the public for giving me the opportunity to serve this county for all these years,” Young said. “I put my heart into it, I took it very seriously.”
Young will officially retire from the position on July 31, 2025.
The Fayette County Commission will then appoint a replacement to serve until the next election.
