FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A routine animal welfare call took a heartbreaking turn Monday afternoon when a Fayette County Humane Society animal control officer discovered a severely neglected dog suffering from an advanced and life-threatening condition known as fly strike.
The dog, described as frail and barely clinging to life, was found covered in painful wounds and infested with maggots.
Fly strike occurs when flies lay eggs on an animal’s skin, and the hatched maggots begin feeding on the flesh, causing extreme pain and potentially fatal injuries if left untreated.
The animal was immediately transported to Fayette Veterinary Hospital, where he is now receiving emergency medical treatment.
According to the Humane Society, the dog’s injuries are extensive, and his recovery will be long and difficult. Despite his condition, the animal still manages to lift his head when spoken to, a sign that he hasn’t given up.
Treatment costs are estimated at $500 to $700, and the organization is seeking community support to help cover expenses.
Donations can be made via PayPal at paypal.me/fayhswv, through Venmo at @Fayhswv, or directly to the Fayette Veterinary Hospital by calling 304-574-4838 and contributing to the Fayette County Humane Society account.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, the humane society released a statement urging the public to be aware of the harsh realities faced by many neglected animals.
“He deserves better,” the organization said. “They all do.”
Photos of the dog’s condition, while graphic, were shared to raise awareness about the importance of reporting animal neglect and supporting local rescue efforts.
