Fayette County man arrested for DUI after injuring five people, including infant in crash

HANDLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A Fayette County man was arrested Monday night after causing a crash in Handley that sent five people including an 8-month-old child to the hospital.

The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office says that the crash occurred just before 10:00 p.m. in the 27000 block of Second Avenue in Handley.

Corporal S.M. Adams investigated the crash and determined a Kia Sportage SUV, driven by John R. Porter, 27-years-old of Powellton, was traveling on Second Avenue when he crossed the center line and struck another vehicle head-on.

Witnesses reported the Kia SUV was weaving across the road just prior to the crash and no evidence was found to show Mr. Porter attempted in any way to avoid the collision.

Five people including an 8-month-old child were inside the Kia when Mr. Porter crashed and three of them including the child were taken to the hospital with injuries. The driver and passenger of the other vehicle were also injured in the crash and taken to area hospitals.

Corporal Adams found sufficient evidence to believe that Mr. Porter was driving under the influence of controlled substances and or drugs and was too impaired to operate a motor vehicle safely.

Furthermore, Mr. Porter was found to be an unlicensed driver and should not have been operating a motor vehicle.

Mr. John Porter was arrested for 4 counts of DUI causing bodily injury, driving under the influence with a minor, child neglect creating substantial risk of injury, and driving with no operators. Mr. Porter is currently being held at South Central Regional Jail on a $7500.00 or 10% cash bond.
