SCARBRO, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A Fayette County man was arrested after deputies responded to a domestic disturbance that was initially reported as a stabbing early Sunday morning.
According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were dispatched to a home on Maple Street in Scarbro at approximately 4:21 a.m. on September 13. The caller reportedly told dispatchers she had been stabbed in the ribs and was unable to leave the residence while the alleged offender remained inside.
Deputies arrived and removed the victim from the home before taking her husband, Jeffrey Adkins, into custody. Two juveniles were also removed from the residence.
The victim told investigators that the couple had been arguing when her husband allegedly stabbed her with a small kitchen knife. Deputies, however, reported seeing no blood or damage to her clothing. The injury appeared to be an abrasion or bruising rather than a stab wound, according to the complaint.
Emergency personnel transported her to Plateau Medical Center, where medical staff reportedly determined that the injury was not a stab wound and appeared consistent with a fingernail scratch or bruising.
The alleged weapon was not located.
Child Protective Services responded and interviewed the two children who were inside the home during the incident. According to the complaint, the children said their parents had been arguing before Jeffrey Adkins allegedly grabbed the victim and held her down, possibly causing her to be injured by a toy on the floor.
Investigators said the victim’s visible injuries appeared consistent with being forcefully grabbed.
Both adults reportedly admitted to drinking vodka before the incident. Deputies said Jeffrey Adkins exhibited slurred speech and smelled strongly of alcohol.
Jeffrey Adkins was arrested and charged with domestic battery. CPS placed a protective order involving the children, who were released to their grandparents pending the agency’s investigation.
No written statements were collected because both adults said they were under the influence of alcohol.
The charge is an allegation, and Jeffrey Adkins is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
