LERONA, WV (LOOTPRESS) — A Florida man is facing multiple charges after allegedly crashing his truck into a fence and passing out intoxicated behind the wheel late Saturday night in Mercer County.
On May 31, 2025, at approximately 10:45 p.m., a state trooper responded to reports of a motor vehicle accident on Pine Grove Road in Lerona. Witnesses told dispatchers the driver had struck a fence on private property three separate timesbefore losing consciousness in the vehicle.
Upon arrival, the trooper found Austin Mahar, who identified himself with a Florida driver’s license, passed out in the driver’s seat. When asked to exit the truck, Mahar was unsteady on his feet and reeked of alcohol. He admitted to drinking earlier that evening.
Attempts to conduct a field sobriety test were cut short when Mahar began vomiting and was unable to continue. EMS transported him to Princeton Community Hospital for treatment.
Authorities noted the damaged mechanical fence, valued at over $1,000, and damage to the front of Mahar’s vehicle consistent with the crash.
While at the hospital, Mahar allegedly became disruptive and profane, shouting at hospital staff and officers, stating he was “smarter than all of you” and directing offensive remarks at the trooper. As a result, he was charged with disorderly conduct in addition to pending DUI-related charges.
After his release around 5:30 a.m., Mahar refused to be fingerprinted, claiming he was “not in the right frame of mind.” He was then transported to Southern Regional Jail in Beaver to await arraignment.
The incident occurred within the jurisdiction of Mercer County, West Virginia.
