(LOOTPRESS) – One of the most striking figures in the modern-day WWE Universe, former WWE Champion Windham Rotunda – also known as Bray Wyatt – passed away on Thursday at 36 years old.
Born in Florida into a wrestling family, Rotunda was a third-generation in-ring performer, captivating World Wrestling Entertainment audiences with his exceptional character work and intense promos.
After an initial stint in the developmental territory NXT, Rotunda would adopt the character of Bray Wyatt, leader of the menacing Wyatt Family. The character would be one with which Rotunda would become widely associated throughout the remainder of his life. The character would also achieve widespread popularity, become one of the biggest merchandise movers for WWE of any superstar on the roster.
Rotunda made a celebrated return to television less than a year ago, competing at Extreme Rules and remaining active until being sidelined once more by a case of COVID-19 in February 2023. The performer was reportedly awaiting medical clearance to return to in-ring competition when he unexpectedly passed away from a heart attack at 36 years old on Thursday, August 24, 2023.
Former champion, chief content officer, and head of creative for WWE, Paul Levesque – also known as Triple H – shared the news in a statement on Thursday following a phone call with Rotunda’s father.
“Just received a call from WWE Hall of Famer Mike Rotunda who informed us of the tragic news that our WWE family member for life Windham Rotunda – also known as Bray Wyatt – unexpectedly passed earlier today. Our thoughts are with his family and we ask that everyone respect their privacy at this time,” read the statement.
An outpouring of condolences and expressions of grief have since emerged from an array of superstars both current and former, including William Regal, Cody Rhodes, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who wrote,
“Im heartbroken over the news of Bray Wyatt’s passing. Always had tremendous respect and love for him and the Rotunda family. Loved his presence, promos, in ring work and connection with @wwe universe. Very unique, cool and rare character, which is hard to create in our crazy world of pro wrestling. Still processing losing the goat, Terry Funk yesterday and now Bray today.
My love, light, strength & mana to the Rotunda family and Funk family during this tough, heartbreaking time.”
