Captain of the second-team all-staters in Class AA at Wyoming East last season, senior Daisha Summers made the move to Greenbrier East this past summer, joining the Lady Spartans.
She’s been a menace for opposing defenses along with all-stater Cadence Stewart.
Class AAAA power George Washington found that out the hard way the week of Jan. 3.
Summers posted 28 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Lady Spartans defeated the Patriots 52-38 in Fairlea.
For her efforts Summers was named the Week 5 Lootpress Girls Basketball Player of the Week by the Lootpress sportswriters.
The award is sponsored by Bodyworks and The Law Offices of Brandon Steele.
Summers was prepared for the early-season challenge and answered.
“I knew it was going to be a tough challenge and had to practice no matter what and get my shots together,” Summers said. “My team, they really helped me out by getting me the ball no matter if somebody was on me. They trusted me and believed in me and had confidence in me and that’s all that matters.”
Building trust and chemistry for Summers has been no easy task as she’s stepped into a new program. But she’s blended well, helping the Lady Spartans rank as high as No. 5 in the AP poll throughout the season. Part of the reason for the smooth transition has been her commitment to strengthening all aspects of her game, thus making her team better.
“It’s way different than Wyoming East,” Summers said. “Even though Skylar (Davidson) was a good point guard and she gave me the ball a lot, I didn’t finish a lot at the rim last year. This year I’m really getting the ball and I’m finishing. I’m finishing my shots, completing my passes and they’re crispy to Cadence for 3. I’ve been working on my assists because I’m trying to be more well-rounded in different spots like assist, rebounds and turnovers. I’m trying to do better in all those categories.”
