Roanoke – Round one of the 89th West Virginia Open is the books and amateur Mason Kidwell from Charles Town has the early lead.
Kidwell fired a five-under par 67 to hold a one shot advantage over Thaddeus Obecny from Wheeling.
Two shots back of Kidwell is two-time champion Christian Brand and defending champion David Bradshaw who has 12 Open trophies to his credit.
Only eight players in the field of 132 managed to break par on day one with five sitting at level par.
Tanner Vest, who will be a senior this year at Shady Spring, and former Wyoming East standout Patrick Smith both shot two-over par and sit inside the top-20.
Round two will begin Thursday morning at 7:30 a.m. At the conclusion of play Thursday, the field will be cut to the lowest 60 scores and ties who will advance to the final round Friday.
