WEBSTER SPRINGS, WV (LOOTPRESS) — Gov. Jim Justice announced that the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) has stocked extra trout in the Elk River near Webster Springs as part of an ongoing study to assess the economic impact of stockings in West Virginia.
WVDNR fisheries staff stocked the Elk River and Back Fork of Elk River catch-and-release section with 750 rainbow trout on Nov. 20. A second stocking of 750 trout is planned for December.
“These additional trout stockings reflect the success of our trout hatchery program, which has helped make West Virginia one of the premier places to fish,” said Gov. Jim Justice. “As a lifelong angler, I’m proud of the incredible fishing opportunities we’re creating for West Virginians and visitors alike. This initiative is all about giving folks more reasons to get outside, experience our great state, and enjoy the thrill of trout fishing in West Virginia.”
Located near Webster Springs, the Elk River and Back Fork of Elk River catch-and-release section are within a short drive of lodging, restaurants, shops and other outdoor adventure destinations, such as Holly River State Park, Big Ditch Lake Wildlife Management Area and the Monongahela National Forest. “These extra stockings are a direct result of our investment in West Virginia’s trout hatchery facilities, which has increased our capacity to raise and release more fish,” said WVDNR Director Brett McMillion. “Thanks to the support from Gov. Justice and recent upgrades to our hatcheries, we’re bringing exciting opportunities to anglers and continuing to build West Virginia’s reputation as a top destination for trout fishing.”
While daily trout stockings are not announced in advance, the WVDNR publishes a list of recently stocked waters at WVdnr.gov/fish-stocking. Anglers may also find out what waters have been stocked by calling the stocking hotline at 304-558-3399. All anglers 15 years and older are required to have a West Virginia fishing license, trout stamp and a valid form of identification while fishing for trout. Licenses and stamps can be purchased at 175 retail locations across the state or online at WVfish.com.
