CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey and state officials are urging caution as ongoing heavy rain has increased the risk of rockslides on roadways across the state.
The West Virginia Emergency Management Division (WVEMD) is closely monitoring conditions alongside local and federal partners.
“With the recent rainfall, rockslides can happen suddenly, so we encourage drivers to remain alert and cautious,” said GE McCabe, WVEMD Director.
Officials are particularly concerned about mountainous areas and roads along steep slopes.
Safety Tips for Travelers:
- Stay Informed: Check weather updates from the National Weather Service (NWS) and road conditions at wv511.org.
- Use Caution on Roads: Be extra alert when driving near hillsides or steep terrain, especially after heavy rain.
- Watch for Warning Signs: Cracks in pavement, small rockfalls, or leaning trees may indicate potential slides.
- Do Not Stop Near Slides: If you see rocks or debris on the road, move to a safe location and report hazards to authorities.
- Plan Ahead: Allow extra travel time and have an alternate route in case of road closures.
State and local officials are monitoring conditions around the clock with the National Weather Service and are prepared to respond as needed.
