LEWISBURG, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Deputies from the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Department responded to a series of calls on Sunday evening regarding alleged suspicious activity at a residence on Benedict Lane in Lewisburg. According to the department, the calls, made by a Daniel Bennett, ultimately proved to be unfounded.
At approximately 5:54 p.m., Deputy B.W. Mitchell was dispatched to the residence following a report from Bennett, who claimed to hear people outside his home and later stated they were trespassing on his porch. Upon arrival, Bennett met the deputy in the yard while holding a pitchfork and asserted that one individual was on the roof and another in the nearby woods.
Deputy Mitchell, joined by Sgt. Doss, conducted a thorough search of the property and found no signs of any intruders. This incident followed a string of similar reports filed by Bennett earlier that day. Deputies had previously searched both the area and the interior of the residence multiple times, yielding no evidence of trespassers.
When questioned, Bennett told deputies he believed the individuals were there to harm him and steal his belongings. He insisted they were simultaneously on the roof, under the house, in the trees, and in trenches in the front yard. However, he admitted to not seeing anyone during his checks with a flashlight. Deputies advised Bennett to only call 911 if he directly observed someone on his property.
An inquiry into call records revealed that Bennett had contacted 911 a total of 14 times over a 24-hour period, tying up emergency lines and dispatchers for extended periods. When asked where the alleged individuals went when law enforcement arrived, Bennett speculated they might still be on the roof or in the trees.
