Fairlea – Annabelle Honaker stroked a two-run single Monday night to give Greenbrier East a 5-4 walkoff win against St. Albans in Game 1 of the Class AAA Region 3 championship in Fairlea.
St. Albans came into the game with a 28-0 record, presumed to be the Class AAA favorites.
The Red Dragons struck first, scoring runs in the second and third inning but East answered in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. The Lady Spartans ultimately took the lead with a run in the fifth, but St. Albans regained the advantage with two runs in the seventh.
Honaker answered the call in the bottom of the frame, notching a hit to the left that scored the runners on second and third and gave East a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-3 series.
Honaker’s two RBIs led the Lady Spartans while Lindsey Back and Olivia Plybon each drove in a run.
The series shifts back to St. Albans on Tuesday and Game 3, if necessary, will be played back in Fairlea.
