CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The Joint Committee on Redistricting’s Website has been updated to include the files of the final adopted maps by the legislature during the recent special session.
As readers know, I have griped about the lack of definitive maps showing the exact boundaries of the two new congressional districts as well as the State Senate and House of Delegates.
While it has concerned me that I could not personally discern the line locations, I was more concerned that John Q. Public couldn’t either. I voiced the opinion that there is no “transparency” when legislation is passed and even some legislators can’t tell you what district they’re in themselves.
I don’t necessarily fault anyone for this. As I’ve written before, legislators and staff members worked extra hard to.get their difficult job done. The Census reported numbers late and that added to the monumental task. Hopefully, ten years from now, technology and transparency will unite to make the process better.
To view the links that should show readers specific maps, visit https://www.wvlegislature.gov/redistricting.cfm. You will see links to the final adopted Congressional, Senate, and House maps in various file formats (PDF, KMZ/Google Earth, SHP, CDF, and JSON).
Once more let me say it: a salute to both House and Senate and their respective staffs for effort above and beyond the call of duty.
