HINTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) — A tragic overdose death that took place at a residence on Herman Street in Hinton, Summers County, has led to a criminal investigation and charges against a local man.
According to authorities, the investigation began when Rebecca Smith was found deceased at 111 Herman Street. The cause of death was later confirmed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner as an overdose involving fentanyl.
During the investigation, Billy Smith, who was reportedly with Rebecca Smith at the time of the incident, admitted to police that he had acquired drugs earlier that day. Smith provided two recorded statements to investigators, both of which were given voluntarily after waiving his Miranda Rights.
In his statements, Smith confessed to trading Clonazepam, a prescription medication, for heroin with an individual identified as Daniel Wells. Smith told investigators that he brought the drugs back to his home, where Rebecca Smith ingested some of the substances.
Authorities have not yet disclosed whether additional charges will be pursued against other parties involved, including Daniel Wells, the alleged source of the heroin.
