BLUEFIELD, WV (LOOTPRESS) – An inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) McDowell has been sentenced to an additional year in prison after authorities discovered weapons in his possession.
Savion Garcia, 24, received the sentence on charges of possessing a weapon in a federal prison.
He will also serve three years of supervised release following his incarceration, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Court documents state that on October 19, 2023, a staff member at FCI McDowell conducted a random search of Garcia’s cell and found two handmade weapons, commonly referred to as “shanks.”
One was a six-inch metal bar with a cloth-wrapped handle, while the other was a sharpened metal piece measuring nearly seven inches.
Garcia admitted to possessing the weapons and acknowledged they were intended for use as weapons.
Senior U.S. District Judge David A. Faber imposed the sentence, which will be served consecutively to Garcia’s current prison term.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy D. Boggess handling the prosecution.
