WEST VIRGINIA (LOOTPRESS) – Drivers in West Virginia are being reminded to fully clear snow from their vehicles this winter, even though state law does not specifically prohibit driving with snow on the roof.
West Virginia does require that a driver’s view remain unobstructed, meaning snow or ice blocking the windshield or windows can result in a violation.
While snow on the roof itself is not explicitly illegal, it can still create dangerous road conditions if it blows off while a vehicle is in motion.
The West Virginia Emergency Management Division advises motorists to “thoroughly clean snow off your car — including the roof. Snow left on car roofs can fly off your vehicle when in motion, creating potentially dangerous situations for you and those driving behind you.”
Officials emphasize that taking a few extra minutes to remove all snow and ice can help prevent accidents and improve safety for everyone on the road.
