CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Justice Thomas Ewing has filed to run for a seat on the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia, seeking election to complete the unexpired term of former Justice Beth Walker.
Justice Ewing was appointed to the court by Governor Patrick Morrisey in August following Walker’s retirement. The election for the remainder of the term will be held during the May 2026 primary.
“It is an honor of a lifetime to serve our great state as a Justice on the Supreme Court of Appeals. I look forward to meeting with folks all around the state to make my case why I should continue to serve on the court. As the son of a coal miner and postmaster, I have learned the value of faith, family, and hard work from my parents, and I will share that experience with the voters,” said Justice Thomas Ewing.
“Because the Supreme Court judges the work of judges, I believe that it is important for the Supreme Court bench to have a perspective and leadership of an experienced circuit court judge.”
Justice Ewing was originally appointed as a circuit judge in the 15th Judicial Circuit by then-Governor Jim Justice on Dec. 7, 2018. He was elected to the position in 2020 and re-elected in 2024.
Prior to joining the bench, Ewing practiced law with Kay, Casto & Chaney, PLLC from 2004 to 2018, serving as managing member of the firm’s Fayetteville office from 2015 to 2018. In 2025, he was recognized as a fellow of the West Virginia Bar Foundation.
A lifelong West Virginian, Ewing is a native of Fayette County, grew up in Hico, and graduated from Midland Trail High School.
He and his wife, Mindy, have been married for 26 years and have four children and two grandchildren. The family attends Grace Baptist Church in Fayetteville.
