CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Justice Thomas H. Ewing will be formally sworn in as a member of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia during an investiture ceremony scheduled for 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, in the Supreme Court Courtroom at the state Capitol.
Ewing, appointed by Gov. Patrick Morrisey on Aug. 6, fills the seat vacated by Justice Beth Walker, who retired earlier this year.

He was officially sworn in during a private ceremony on Aug. 27 so he could begin serving ahead of the Court’s fall term.
A native of Fayette County, Ewing is the first Supreme Court justice from that area.
He previously served as a circuit judge in the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit beginning in 2019, first by appointment from Gov. Jim Justice and later through election in 2020 and re-election in 2024.
Before joining the bench, Ewing practiced law at Kay, Casto & Chaney, PLLC, where he managed the firm’s Fayetteville office.
As a circuit judge, he oversaw the county’s Adult Treatment Court and launched programs such as the Family Treatment Court, Teen Court, and Truancy Diversion Program. He has also served on the state’s Juvenile Justice Commission since 2019.
Ewing is a graduate of Glenville State College and the West Virginia University College of Law. He has been recognized as a 2025 West Virginia Bar Foundation Fellow and as a Champion of Children by Just for Kids, Inc.
In addition to his judicial work, Ewing has been active in youth sports and community organizations, serving on the board of the Midland Trail Community Center. He and his wife, Mindy, live in Fayetteville and have four children and two grandchildren.
Seating for the Oct. 6 ceremony will be limited, though members of the media are encouraged to attend.
