BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Shoppers across southern West Virginia may have noticed a familiar favorite missing from store shelves in recent weeks, Topo Chico.
The popular sparkling mineral water, long known for its crisp carbonation and glass bottle presentation, has become increasingly difficult to find at major retailers including Walmart and Kroger. The shortage is not limited to West Virginia, it is part of a broader supply disruption affecting stores across the United States.
Topo Chico is owned and distributed globally by The Coca-Cola Company, which has confirmed that production of the original mineral water has been significantly reduced due to issues at its source in Monterrey, Mexico.
Unlike most bottled waters, Topo Chico is drawn from a natural mineral spring, meaning production is directly tied to the stability and quality of that specific source. Reports indicate that the company has encountered operational challenges related to the well system and bottling infrastructure, prompting a temporary slowdown.
Rather than risk inconsistent quality, Coca-Cola has opted to address the problem at its origin, resulting in a sharp decline in available supply.
Industry reporting suggests that Coca-Cola is currently investing in upgrades to both the water source and bottling facilities in Mexico. These improvements are intended not only to resolve current issues but also to expand long term production capacity for the brand.
The shortage appears to primarily impact the classic glass bottle mineral water, which is sourced directly from the Monterrey spring. Other Topo Chico branded products, including canned flavored sparkling waters and hard seltzers, have remained more widely available because they are manufactured differently and do not rely on the same natural spring source.
Current estimates suggest that Topo Chico could begin returning to store shelves as early as mid 2026, with broader availability potentially following later in the year depending on the pace of infrastructure improvements. However, no firm nationwide restocking date has been confirmed.
Topo Chico has developed a strong following in recent years, particularly among consumers seeking a high carbonation alternative to traditional soft drinks. Its absence has been noticeable for many loyal customers, especially in regions where demand has steadily grown.
For now, shoppers may continue to encounter empty shelves as the company works to restore supply and bring the iconic mineral water back to market.
