SACRAMENTO, CA (LOOTPRESS) — Former Vice President Kamala Harris announced Wednesday that she will not enter the race for California governor, putting an end to months of speculation about her political future following her 2024 presidential loss to Donald Trump.
In a public statement, Harris said she had seriously considered a gubernatorial bid but ultimately decided against it. “I love this state, its people, and its promise. It is my home. But after deep reflection, I’ve decided that I will not run for Governor in this election,” she said.
Harris emphasized that while she will step back from elected office for now, she remains committed to public service. She plans to help support Democratic candidates nationwide and hinted at sharing more about her future plans in the coming months.
Though she made no mention of a potential 2028 presidential run, Harris reaffirmed her dedication to fighting for “freedom, opportunity, fairness, and the dignity of all,” vowing to stay involved in the national conversation.
Harris previously served as California’s attorney general and U.S. senator before becoming vice president in 2021. In 2024, she replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee after he withdrew from the race.
A person close to Harris said she remains eager to connect with voters — this time as a private citizen — and added that more announcements are on the way, though not related to a 2028 campaign.
“She still wants to be part of the national conversation,” the person said, noting that a governor’s role would limit her ability to engage in broader debates on key issues.
