‘Leave Fireworks to the Professionals’, Fire Marshal says ahead of 4th of July celebrations

RICHMOND, VA (LOOTPRESS) – While residents around the country are gearing up to celebrate the Fourth of July on Thursday, the Virginia Department of Fire Programs – State Fire Marshal’s Office has issued a warning to “leave fireworks to the professionals.”

Virginia is one of a number of states throughout the country that prohibited all but “permissible fireworks” as defined by state code to be sold, possessed, or used. Additionally, there are localities which prohibit the use of fireworks altogether, and authorities urge residents to check local ordinances before celebrating with fireworks.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission indicates that, in 2023 alone, an estimated 9,700 injuries occurred involving the use of fireworks. Additionally, eight fatalities were reported, one of which occurred in the state of Virginia.

“Misuse of fireworks can be deadly,” Virginia State Fire Marshal Billy Hux says. “Opt for safety this holiday by enjoying fireworks at a professionally organized show.”

Those who opt to celebrate the nation’s independence this July 4th with legally permissible fireworks have been encouraged to follow certain safety precautions to minimize the likelihood of an unintended accident.

These include keeping a bucket of water or garden hose on hand for use in the event of a fire or other accident. It is also recommended that both spent and unused fireworks be soaked in water for several hours before being discarded.

The National Safety Council recommends that fireworks not be handled by young children, and that they only be handled by older children under the close supervision of one or more adults. Those using or standing near fireworks should utilize protective eyewear, and fireworks should never, under any circumstances, be lit indoors.

While enjoying fireworks under the direction of a professional is ideal, adults handling fireworks should never do so while impaired by drugs or alcohol.

Specifics for both Virginia and West Virginia state code with regard to fire and fireworks use are available online.
