CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – December Interim sessions for members of the West Virginia Legislature began this week, with an assembly of the Legislative Oversight Commission taking place on Sunday afternoon.
Commission members received information on the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form, with presenters indicating that federal aid – and most state aid – may only become available to students through completion of the FAFSA form.
The simplification of the form was also discussed, as the FAFSA was previously several pages long, causing issues for many students and caregivers in locating significant information. These updated forms were initially meant to be available last year, with the anticipated date being changed to October of 2023. The form remains unavailable, and must be made available by December 31, 2023, by federal law.
Notably, nine FAFSA workshops were hosted by HEPC in November, and nine distinct forms were reviewed as part of the process. Ergo, information with regard to what the updated forms are expected to look like is extremely limited at the time of writing.
In anticipation of an array of questions and concerns from students, caregivers, and educators, a whopping 56 FAFSA workshops are reportedly scheduled to take place throughout the months of January and February.
